Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Wanderers unique?

Wanderers is unique in that we offer exploratory adventures rather than an immobile camp. We visit national parks, monuments and sea sides all around the Bay area, and give your children a freedom they wouldn’t otherwise get to experience. Time to play and interact with the natural world is our most important goal.

There are many other outdoor camps to choose from, but most are in urban areas and don’t give kids the opportunity to see and experience so much in one week.

When and where do I drop off and pick up my child?  Is extended care available?

You will need to drop off your child at Julius Kahn Playground in the Presidio Park of San Francisco at 9am and pick up by 5pm.

Julius Kahn Playground address:
3395-3699 W Pacific Ave
San Francisco, CA 94118

Yes, extended care is available. It is $10 per child per day for the hour before the camp starts and $10 per day per child for the hour after camp finishes. One of our staff members will be at the playground to greet your child and will stay with them until they depart. Children will be supervised at all times.

What will the transportation be and who is driving?
Staff members will be driving your children in 7 or 8 passenger minivans or SUVs. All staff are required to have a clean driving record as well as familiarity with laws regarding the transportation of children.
What is the staff to camper ratio?
There is a maximum of 20 children in a hiking group, with 4 staff members per group, which means a ratio of approximately 1 to 5.
Is lunch provided? How do you accommodate picky eaters?

Yes, we can provide kid-friendly, healthy lunches for an extra fee of $30. There is a menu on the registration form to order each day's lunch for your child. We can accommodate most dietary needs.  For super picky eaters, however, we recommend that mom or dad packs the lunch. Please discuss any concerns with us.

On the camping programs we will provide meals from lunch on Monday through lunch on Friday.

Children are expected to bring their own water bottles. Wanderers provides snacks for all programs.

What will the campers do if it is raining?
It doesn’t often rain in the Bay area in the summer, and even then not for long. However, we do have alternate activities planned should the need arise. We will have some fun indoor time at places like the Marin Headlands Visitor Center, Bay Area Discovery Museum, Pt. Reyes Visitor Center and a local lighthouse.
How long are you actually hiking? What if my child gets tired?
While this is an active camp, our hikes are designed to be kid-friendly. We spend a lot of our hiking time learning about plants and animals along the way. Rest and play time are built into every day’s schedule.
How do you accommodate different age groups?
We know how important it is for your child to be among kids of his or her own age. That’s why we have limited our camps to two grades together only (for example, grades 3 and 4). You will see by our calendar that we have allotted certain weeks of the summer to certain age groups.
