Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Wanderers unique?

Wanderers is unique in that we offer exploratory adventures rather than an immobile camp. We visit national parks, monuments and sea sides all around Northern California, and give your children a freedom they wouldn’t otherwise get to experience. Time to play and interact with the natural world is our most important goal.

There are many other outdoor camps to choose from, but most are in urban areas and don’t give kids the opportunity to see and experience so much in one week.

When and where do I drop off and pick up my child?

Drop off and pick up is at Julius Kahn Playground in the Presidio Park of San Francisco.

Julius Kahn Playground address:
3395-3699 W Pacific Ave
San Francisco, CA 94118

What will the transportation be and who is driving?
Staff members will be driving your children in 7 or 8 passenger minivans or SUVs. All staff are required to have a clean driving record as well as familiarity with laws regarding the transportation of children.
What is the staff to camper ratio?
There is a maximum of 15 kids and 4 staff members, an approximately 4 campers to 1 staff ratio.
What is the food like? How do you accommodate picky eaters?
We offer healthy, kid-friendly meals during camp. Examples of some of the meals are - chicken or veggie fajitas for dinner, sandwiches, fruit and trail mix for lunch and pancakes and fruit for breakfast. The children will help plan the menu and cook all the meals. We can accommodate most dietary needs. Please discuss any concerns with us.

Children are expected to bring their own water bottles.

What will the campers do if it is raining?
It doesn’t often rain in the Northern California in the summer, and even then not for long. However, we do have alternate activities planned should the need arise. We will have some fun indoor time at places like local visitor centers, lighthouses, or educational museums.
How long are you actually hiking? What if my child gets tired?
While this is an active camp, our hikes are designed to be kid-friendly. We spend a lot of our hiking time learning about plants and animals along the way. Rest and play time are built into every day’s schedule.
How do you accommodate different age groups?
We know how important it is for your child to be among kids of his or her own age. That’s why we have limited our camps to age groups: e.g. 7-9 year olds, 8-11 year olds, etc. You will see by our calendar that we have allotted certain weeks of the summer to certain age groups.
